KISSING WINTER GOODBYE

Years ago, moving from Minnesota to California, I had to make some lifestyle changes. Away from my beloved rural living, and unable to afford a horse, I had to find a way to satisfy my deep, deep need to connect with Mother Nature.

So, I got the biggest redwood planter box that would fit in my Mustang, and parked a Sterling Silver rose bush on my 2nd floor patio. I knew nothing about roses, but I could afford books, so I learned. "Silver" soon had companions: Blue Girl, Purple Tiger, Taboo, Afterglow, Gold Medal... I went a little nuts. I also learned that - even in California - a late frost can be heart-breaking.

This is the time of year that Winter stamps his feet and howls about being ousted again by Summer. Generally speaking, we all rejoice at the return of the sun (do we ever welcome Winter?), and giggle and coo over the bulging new buds and fuzzy trees... Would we have such appreciation without Winter?

I browsed another gardening book this past weekend. The author referred to Winter as "the great leveler." In Spring, the bursting new foliage of this plant or that takes our breath away. In Summer, the riot of colorful blooms dazzles our eyes. In Autumn, we turn again to the foliage in its red, orange, and golden display... but in Winter! In Winter, all is laid bare.

In Winter, we are able to see the true structure and condition of things. It is in the Winter of a relationship that we are most clearly shown strengths and weaknesses. It is in the Winter of our own soul that we discover the stuff of which we're made.

Truly, life would be easier without Winters. But when would we grow? And how?

Just pondering,
Vara

STORIES WE NEED TO KNOW
By ALLAN G. HUNTER

There are so many people, many of whom we encounter every day, who seem to be suffering from some sort of soul starvation. Many of us feel this at some point in our lives. Perhaps it surfaces when we find that for some reason we feel bored and discontented...

2012 AND YOUR LIFE TODAY
By GINA E. JONES

The history of the Maya has, for the most part, been shrouded in mystery and speculation. Most of the Mayan texts were destroyed by the Catholic priests traveling with the conquistadors all in the name of Christianity. Four texts survived having made their way to museums and libraries in Europe. What is currently known about the Maya is...

The month of April contains days of historical significance throughout the world. HEALING: SACRIFICE
By ROSS BISHOP

Our ancestors viewed life as being either sacred or profane. Profanity was that which stood outside the God Space, it could not be brought into the temple. The ancients recognized that a disease or a mental difficulty in either a person or a group was brought about by profanity...

THE GATHERING OF THE PEACEMAKERS
BY ROBERT ROSKIND

"I once heard an interview with Lillian Carter, President Carter's mother," Robert, an author and businessman, remembers. "She was asked why she was joining the Peace Corps in her seventies. She replied, 'A thrid of your life to learn, a third to earn and a third to serve.' That stuck with me and before I knew it, we had reached the last third. When we thought about what we might do to help the planet at this time, we both felt that our what would help the most was to encourage love and remind people that is why we are here."

ANIMAL POWERS
BY AMY ZERNER AND MONTY FARBER

Animals are our sisters and brothers, our friends and neighbors, and they can be our teachers if we will only listen to the lessons they teach us by their very being. The Wheel of Life tells us we are all connected. Each of the animals pictured has its own special power and lesson to teach. In this quiz, take a few moments to think deeply about the message that each of the twelve particular animal embodies...

LIGHT BEHIND BARS:
Soul Blossoming, April '08

BY TOM BROWN

As several other inmates and I meet on this barren prison yard, we often greet each other with this question: "Are you feeling the blessings of another day in paradise?" Of course, we're joking about the "paradise" part, but there is an element of truth here, too. After countless pursuits to find peace within or become something special, we discover that where we are is where it can be found...

HOLDING ON TO ILLUSIONS
BY MICHAEL LEVY

A couple of weeks ago I was performing one of my daily exercises swimming laps when I observed a women, in her early seventies, enter the pool and securely grasp hold of the side. She slowly made her way round the pool to the deep end by holding on to the side of the pool and moving her hands to guide her way to the deep end. She then let go and swam on her back all the way to the shallow end. I watched her repeat this...

OUR MOST POWERFUL TEACHERS

BY STEVE ROBERTS

My wife and I adopted our daughter Cindy when she was nine, nearly 30 years ago now. We'd known Cindy and her immediate biological family since she was three, which means we witnessed the consequences of her birth mother's inability to nurture and protect her children. This inability included bad taste in men. Your imagination will unlikely lead you far from the reality of our daughter's early life. The most significant consequences for Cindy are all but unknowable...

FROM THE HEART: Healing Funeral

BY ALAN COHEN

I recently attended the memorial service of a friend who was loved and respected by many. Ron was a conscious husband and father who contributed a great deal of his skill, time, and money to community service. Ron was also highly dedicated to his spiritual path, and strove to live with clarity and joy. He moved through the process of his passing with extraordinary consciousness and remembrance of the presence of God...

SPIRIT TALES: The Little Girl From the Stars
BY DANA MRKICH

There once was a little girl. This little girl came from the stars and all her life wondered why she was here on Earth instead of back home amongst the planets and moonbeams. One day she was at the depth of her despair. "Why have you left me here?" she cried. "Why can't you take me back home?"

SEASONS OF THE SOUL:
Consciously Becoming Conscious Of Being Conscious

BY KATHLEEN JACOBY

We act upon life and life experiences affect us. We can go through the process on automatic pilot, reacting to events and perceived hurts and joys, or we can become an observer observing ourselves. THE META-HUMAN PROTOTYPE, Part 5

BY DANIEL JACOB

The primary distinction between "divinity" and "humanity" seems to narrow down to the Power of Choice. Gods choose while Humans simply adapt. The analogy that people are like pawns in a chess game, being played by Gods (or Devils) is well-known and reasonably accurate...

SPIRITUALLY INTELLIGENT LEADERSHIP, Part 5: Responsivness

BY WILLIAM DIEDRICH

People often refer to the ability to communicate well as a soft skill. There is nothing soft about being a leader who effectively communicates, nor is it the skill that makes you effective. Effective communication is a way of being. It comes from honoring the connection that we all share. You cannot lead from a place of disconnection. In order to connect with others we must become responsive...

THE VAN GOGH BLUES: The Creative Person's Path Through Depression
BY ERIC MAISEL, PhD.

Whose meaning tasks are harder: those of the unbeliever who finds the universe meaningless or those of the believer who doubts but clings to belief? Who can say? What we know is that both have grave meaning problems, as evidenced by clerics turning to atheism on their deathbeds and atheists asking for church funerals as their final requests...

STORYCATCHER: Making Sense Of Our Lives Through the Power and Practice Of Story (Part 1 of 2)
BY CHRISTINA BALDWIN

The day pulls the rain back into its mouth, giving us a wee bit of time to ramble this ancient valley. I'm visiting Kilmartin, Scotland, the land of my bloodlines, and I feel the cells of my body singing with return. For eight thousand years people have lived here on these rolling knobby hills and in the deep silted rifts...
