Dear Readers,

Some of you may note that this is the second month in a row that I am writing the Editor's Letter. I could say something snippy like Sandie has discovered the power of delegation but…the real reason is that her day job (i.e., the one that pays the bills) has demanded a lot of her time this summer. So, once again, just as we were preparing to go live with this issue, she passed this particular buck to me while she jets off to business meetings in Europe. (It's a tough job, she assures me, but someone's got to do it. Oh, how my heart bleeds for her!)

It seems that the current juxtaposition of different elements in the Universe is creating an environment where many Lightworkers are either falling ill or having difficulty with ego issues. For instance, in the former case, regular contributor Elaine Harrison has been very ill and will not be present in print for this issue. We do know that she is present in other ways, and rest assured, Notes from an Animal Psychic's Casebook will return in October. I know that Elaine will be most appreciative of any loving energy that you direct her way.

Since various reports suggest that the next few months may well present us with many opportunities to work on our egos, it is this latter issue, "Let go of my ego!" that I write about this month. What I am about to say on the subject of ego is not classical psychiatric or psychological interpretation, although I am familiar with them, having trained as a clinical psychologist at one time. The current understanding that I have about ego comes from my own experiences and awareness around Spiritual evolution. Ego is the product of our own experiences. We are not born with egos; we develop them. Karma that we carry forward into a new lifetime may predispose us to readily adapt certain behaviors for the purpose of having lessons; nonetheless, my ego is my own creature born of this lifetime.

Why does ego develop? Ego develops because humans learn at an early age that other humans, older and presumably wiser, judge them and decide when they are worthy of love and acceptance. It happens to all of us. It is one of the operating principles of humanness. You have had it done to you, and you have done it to others. The system of creating the illusion of conditional love is self-perpetuating.

What is ego? There are two facets to the ego. The first is to defend ourselves against other people finding out that we are only worthy of conditional love and acceptance. This judgment set before each of us at a tender age is a potential life sentence without possibility of parole. The defenses take many forms from violent to passive. All have the same purpose, to protect us from receiving further judgment. Ultimately, the ego defenses don't work, and we create more of them that are likewise doomed to failure because other people continue to judge us just as we judge them - a most efficient karmic virus.

This brings us to the second facet of ego, namely, the creation of strategies designed to convince others that we are indeed worthy of unconditional love and acceptance (even though we don't believe we are). We use these strategies to elevate ourselves above others so they see us as superior to themselves in some way. Someone becomes "larger than life" - think about that one - how could a human who is a part of life be larger than life? People do this in many bizarre ways from the manipulations of the dictator to the visceral and emotional appeal of the rock star.

What about you, what about me in this matter of ego? It is simple but not necessarily easy. I find the key to dealing with my ego lies in awareness. Awareness is a state of consciousness in which I am present to the choices I have. I can choose to be in a state of ego (and let loose the fears that create karmic moments) or I can simply choose to accept whatever is in the moment and bask in the bliss of letting go and detaching from the fear that nips at my heels. Detaching, letting go is not inaction. I can take action free of the chains of belief about how something "should be." When I detach from such beliefs, the actions that I take are in love and compassion.

How do I know when to shift into a state of awareness? Anytime I am spewing out judgments, opinions, and conditions is an opportunity to shift from ego to acceptance. It is then that I experience our Divinity and the wonderful gifts it brings. You can too. It only requires awareness.

May this month bring what you seek. Comments are always welcome.
