The Work We Do |

I WAS SITTING having coffee with two friends of mine, and we were talking about the joys of dating – it was a real 30’s singles conversation – we were talking about venturing into the very scary arena of Internet dating (I think it missed our generation – as all three of us are sceptical of this technology-driven way to meet ‘Mr Right’. Jaci is 30-something and is currently unemployed. She has a background in marketing, and has also taught English to Foreign Students, but is struggling to find a job. She was saying that she doesn’t want to meet someone until she has a job. She wants the job, then the relationship. The reason for this, she explained, is that she feels that we are defined by what we do - actually, we are not only defined by what we do,we are judged by what we do, and not having a job gives us no points when looking for a partner! As she was saying this, I thought, she has a point, and the energy within felt a bit uncomfortable, but I didn’t think anything of it. Society is a tricky thing because it does judge what we do and it defines us by what we do. Doctors are more prestigious than dentists – I mean dentists dig in peoples mouths – yuck! And podiatrist’s... well, that is just awful because they touch people's feet! If you are a receptionist, well, is that enough? And if you are a PA, you must be really great at collecting dry cleaning! Judged, defined and compartmentalized in one of society's many compartments.
I was filled with Spirit’s beautiful energy, Jaci’s words came back to me ‘you are defined by what you do’ and I thought, Yes! You most certainly are, but I see this differently and clearly now. You must celebrate what you do – because whatever you do is an important job. Your job is essential to humanity, whether you are a garbage collector, a cleaner, a mother, a lawyer, a doctor or a human being existing in this dimension. Your job contributes to the intricate and delicate lattice we call life. Each of us is a light on the lattice – a light joining and creating the very thing we call society. I salute
every human being in this world doing a job. I honour you and thank
you. I thank you for creating the space for humanity to exist in. |
