A Man of Visions
B Y   S E R E N A   P O I S S O N

HE STANDS TALL. He wears denim; a bandana holds his long black hair in place. Certainly from his clothing and stance, you recognize that he is a Native American. As he turns and you see his face, you can feel the energy of his strength. Looking into his eyes you see the gentleness of this Spiritual Warrior. This describes the first time I saw Rod Bearcloud Berry. We were in Coronado to meet him and see his latest picture. Bearcloud is an artist.

In reality he is much more than an artist. He is a Vision Seeker. In his own words, he lives in the world of vision most of the time - walking in the two worlds isn't easy but it is something he has done for the last twenty-plus years.

He was born in 1950 in Amarillo, Texas but lived in Oklahoma and Colorado before moving back to Texas where he completed high school. He had 11 brothers and sisters and was raised in a large, extended family. His ancestry is Osage, part of the Chippewa Ojibwe, Anishinabe (People Who Fell From the Sky) Nation and Welsh. His earliest memory of art is the drawings he did beginning about age 5. His serious art began at age 12 when he was given a 'paint by the number' set and he quickly realized this was his calling, his gift and his passion.

With a dedicated purpose, he attended Amarillo College, Texas State Institute and the University of Maryland, England where he learned the technical skills needed for his chosen career. His true teachings have come from the whispers in the wind; the bend of a tree branch; the winding path of a brook; the play of shadow on the rocks and the ever-changing clouds. The earth has opened to him to reveal her secrets, allowing him to use these secrets in his paintings. To view his work, go to www.bearcloudgallery.com.

He began hearing the call of his people and realized that he could draw on his heritage and his talents, blend them and share the results with the rest of the world. His art evokes feelings and reactions from all who see it. Each picture is filled with layers of meaning and an individual will find the first layer, keep looking and finding deeper and deeper layers. In his words, "My art arrives from the visions that come to me through the sacred pipe and other ceremonies, in the way of my people... the more you get balanced and in tune with nature and with the artwork, the spirit helpers begin to show themselves one at a time."

We saw his work for the first time at a weekend Pow-Wow in Balboa Park located in San Diego. Spirits Touching was on display in front of booth. My husband had walked one way; I had gone another. He came to me and said you've got to see this. I followed him over and from about 15 feet away, I began to cry. I was overcome with tears and had to walk side ways and get out of the direct line of the picture. After a bit, I was able to walk in from the side and see the painting. Later that week, my husband went to the local gallery showing Bearcloud's work and bought Spirits Touching. He said that I should have any picture which evoked that much emotion and that it was obviously meant for me.

Spirits Touching
She give to the people the sacred bundle
that they may know their connection to the Great Spirit;
and the Great Spirit would be touching and they would
know their connection to the universe.

Over the next fifteen years, we continued to experience a deep psychic connection to Bearcloud and his work. This is reflected in the subjects of his paintings and the fact that we have so many of them in our home. They are the first thing people remark on when they come in! My husband was drawn to The Guardian as strongly as I was drawn to Spirits Touching.

The Guardian
I had a dream one night
there was a great mountain,
and the clouds were swirling fast.
A spirit warrior approached
on a horse. Perhaps he was
looking for intention. If that were so,
then he truly would be
a guardian.

Over those same years we have seen Bearcloud's work reflect the changing dynamics in his life. There was always the spiritual maturity one would expect from someone much older, but the reflection of his personal journey has begun to show. He has moved deeper into the mysteries of the universe. His vision is becoming clearer.

As Bearcloud's art began to reflect the depths of his spiritual journey, his interests moved beyond the concept of paint to canvas. His visions had revealed to him many sacred symbols. These symbols appear in his paintings, hidden within clouds, animals, trees - everywhere. As a Vision Seeker, it was only natural that, as his inner vision and physical vision began to meld more and more, he would receive entry into another source of symbols.

In 1996 the cover of a magazine caught his eye - it was a crop circle in England. His curiosity took him into other books and resources, looking for more information on these symbols. England has been the primary focus of the crop circle phenomena and Bearcloud has traveled there every summer since 1997. Looking for and recording about the formations, he has come to believe that they are messages from the Star People. Working with others of like mind and further researching into fractal geometry, he is striving to translate the messages to be found in the Star Glyphs.

The connection between Bearcloud and the Star People began long before he saw the crop circles on the front of a magazine. During a vision in 1989, a symbol appeared to him. This symbol was unknown to him but was to play a significant role in his life over the next few years. Feeling the strength of the connection with the symbol, he designed a bracelet with the symbol on it and he wears that bracelet today. He was to see that symbol again in a Star Glyph which formed in 1997. By now he was immersed in his search for meaning and translation of the symbols he was seeing, so consulted a book on petroglyphs which contained thousands of symbols.

He found it with the caption, "6 to 7000 years old, No known meaning." Further research revealed that it came from his direct lineage of ancestors. While it was a part of his nation, it was no longer used. A Medicine Man (Wacasa Wakan) was to tell him that it had to do with expanding levels of consciousness. To quote Bearcloud, "It was at that point that the doors opened for me and from then on I was able to see the incredible gifts lying dormant within the hidden structures of the 'Star Glyphs'. They unfolded like a book as the pages of hidden geometry began pouring out."

Bearcloud has had several personal encounters with Star Glyph formations. In 2003 he was awakened and compelled to go out to East Field about 2:30 a.m. A formation hadn't appeared there, yet he had a strong need to be there. He took along his video camera. As he sat in the light rain, nothing happened. The next morning he went to another location to film sunrise through the early morning fog. A couple of weeks later while showing the video, he saw a light anomaly. With his usual curiosity and precision he downloaded the video to his computer for a closer look.

Telling very few people about the extent of what was on the video when viewed frame by frame, he took the video to a well-known UFO researcher. Seeing a triangular shape of three lights in the sky and a line of six lights against a hill, there was also a purple glow in the distance. At the end of the video was a UFO taking off. After six months of research, it was determined that this was in fact an anomaly and a UFO taking off. What a gift from the Star People and truly a communication of spirit!

More recently, Bearcloud felt strongly that a formation would appear near Avebury. Again getting up in the middle of the night and driving to the Avebury Stone Circle area, he waited. Using high powered night vision binoculars, he watched and waited. Deciding that nothing was happening, he got into his car to leave. Then felt compelled to get out of the car and look again this time from a slightly different location. After determining that nothing was happening again, he drove about 20 minutes away to watch the sunrise.

That strong feeling - need to return to Avebury Stone Circle area came over him again. Returning to the same location where he had first been about an hour and fifteen minutes earlier, there was now a formation. This formation was between 200 and 300 feet across. Bearcloud entered the formation finding 24 square spirals and a triangular configuration in the center. While there was no conscious awareness of any dialogue taking place, there was a distinct feeling of communication, a telephathic connection.

Bearcloud has developed an amazing computer-generated presentation concerning the Star Glyphs and their meanings. He feels strongly that it is time to share all of the information he's gathered. For more information on how to connect with Bearcloud, you can go to his website: www.starnationgallery.com. You'll find numerous articles on his adventures and presentations he has made on this subject.

These symbols, these Star Glyphs are filled with ancient symbols used by peoples from all over the planet. Some are found in cave drawings; others in petroglphys found throughout the world. No matter what the specific message might be, the overall message is that each individual must decipher what they mean to the individual.

In talking about his artwork, the focus is on the subject matter and the beautiful intensity reflected from the canvas. Looking at the Star Glphys from Bearcloud's perspective, we see the personal tool of transformation they can be.

In closing, I must come back to the man. He is more than that. His life reflects his visions. He lives in beauty - without and within. The Star People have chosen this man to be their voice. They have chosen well.
