ONE MORNING A LITTLE BOY asked his teacher, "Where can I find the truth?
I need to know where the truth lies because my parents fight all the time, and
both say they are being truthful about their own heart's conflict. So, I am quite
confused right now. I love them both, but I can’t seem to make any sense out
of what they are telling me."
The professor looked at the boy directly in the eyes and with much certainty said,
"You will find the truth in Mount Athos, a place far far away from here. In this place,
you will encounter a monk that will guide you to the truth."
So the confused boy grew up preparing his voyage to Mount Athos in Greece.
Many years later, after a very long journey, endless paperwork and great fatigue,
he finally arrived at the Xeropotomou monastery in Mount Athos.
"Where is the truth?" he asked the monk. My parents fight all the time and both
say they are being honest about their feelings.
The monk very gently sat the grown boy on a chair, took one for himself and paused
a few minutes. He reached over to the young man's right hand and squeezed
it slightly as if to say; I'm with you son, I'm with you."
After several minutes more of complete silence, he smiled and said, "Both your
parents are right and wrong at the same time. Beware of beautiful words. Truth is
not found in words. Truth is found in your heart and what you think of yourself is what you think of the world you live in. The truth lies in your purpose in life. It will only be found in service to others, and in being connected to something far greater than your body, your mind, or your emotions. Use your heart's intelligence
to create your life poetry."
The young man thanked the monk and left the Holy mountain to return to his parent's home.
He went to his mother, kissed her on the cheek and said, "I love you." He went to
his father, also kissed him on the cheek and said, "I love you." Before leaving he
gave his parent's a little card and off he went with his smile and glowing eyes.
The parents also smiled, took a few minutes to shake the emotions off and read
the card; "The sun always shines behind the clouds," and thanked his
parents for being who they are.
