"THE ROSE, due to its enchanting fragrance and form, has been cultivated over many centuries. Goethe, the poet with the scientist's eye, thought of it as the archetype of the plant kingdom. Early Rosicrucians used it as their emblem, symbolic of purified blood/passion and a symbol of reincarnation. "The rose is a universal symbol of the heart, compassion and love. A bouquet of roses is a traditional offering symbolizing heart-felt feelings. In the garden of a Church of Assisi dedicated to St. Francis, there are tall thornless roses near the wall. "Over the centuries, numerous artists have painted the Rose. In this remarkable version, two dimensions meet, represented by a tint of bluish-green (veridian), and pale, bluishred (magenta). "The color magenta is associated with the inner passion of life; while veridian carries in it a spiritual quality akin to timelessness. Green is not usually a color associated with rose petals, however petals are metamorphosed leaves. The leaves "inhale" light from the sun; the petals "exhale" light to the soul. "The redness of the rose has its complementary color; a color which would arise spontaneously if one were to concentrate on the red; then close one's eyes and dwell upon what arises. An ethereal emerald greenish rose appears, independent of any effort. Red relates to passion and blood. Green carries with it a quality of objectivity. In the diastol/systole of the heart's movement, the two are united. Hence this poetic symbol of physical love is transformed to one of spiritual freedom."
